Lemosho Route (7 Days)

Lemosho Route (7 Days)
Kilimanjaro Trek 7 Days / 6 Nights Uhuru Peak
Kilimanjaro Package

A quieter western approach through remote rainforest, joining the Machame route at Barranco.

Lemosho starts further west and further from the crowds than Machame, beginning in genuinely remote rainforest before crossing the wide-open Shira Plateau and joining the Machame route at Barranco Camp for the summit push.

It's a longer approach than most other routes, which generally means better acclimatisation and less congestion on the trail in the early days — a good choice if you'd rather not share the first few days with as many other groups.

Your Day-by-Day Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Tap a day to see the details

After a night at Arusha Planet Lodge, you're collected early and driven to the gate. Registration at Londorossi Gate, then a drive to the trailhead and a walk through dense montane rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (2,780m) — often good for spotting colobus monkeys.

The forest thins into moorland as the trail climbs onto the Shira Plateau, reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) with your first open views of Kibo's summit.

A shorter, gentler day crossing the plateau to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m), with time in the afternoon to acclimatise and take in the surrounding volcanic scenery.

The trail climbs to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m), where the Lemosho route joins the Machame route for the remainder of the climb.

Climb High, Sleep LowReaching 4,630m before sleeping at 3,900m is one of the most effective single days for altitude adjustment on the mountain.

A shorter day that starts with the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble, before a gentler walk to Karanga Camp (3,995m).

A short walk up to Barafu Camp (4,673m) for rest and an early dinner, before a midnight departure for the summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descending afterward to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your certificate is issued before the drive back to Arusha, where a room is waiting at Arusha Planet Lodge for a hot shower and a final night before your onward journey.

Lemosho Route (7 Days) — Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?
No technical climbing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the days on the mountain. Regular walking or hiking beforehand is the best preparation.
What's your summit success rate on this route?
It varies by route and by how well you acclimatise, which is exactly why the extra day on longer itineraries genuinely helps — more time at altitude before the summit push meaningfully improves your odds.
How is Lemosho different from Machame once they join up?
From Barranco Camp onward, Lemosho and Machame follow the exact same route to the summit. The difference is entirely in the first three days, which are quieter and more remote on Lemosho.
