Five days across Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater — the three parks most people picture when they think of a Tanzania safari — with enough time in the Serengeti to actually settle in rather than just pass through.
Four nights out: one near Tarangire, two in the Serengeti, and one near the Ngorongoro Crater, before the drive back to Arusha on the final day.

Collection from your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport, then a drive of a little under two hours south-west into Tarangire National Park. The tarmac gives way to open acacia country, and the afternoon's game drive is your first proper taste of the bush.
Tarangire holds some of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania during the dry months, as herds converge on the Tarangire River, and the park's baobab trees — some many centuries old — give the landscape a distinctive character found nowhere else on this route.

The route climbs across the Ngorongoro highlands before dropping onto the Serengeti plains, with game viewing continuing along the way. The scale of the place is the first thing that strikes most visitors — 14,750 square kilometres of grassland with a horizon that barely changes for hours.
Depending on the time of year, this stretch can put you in the path of the wildebeest migration, and the Serengeti's resident lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant populations mean the game viewing rarely lets up, migration or not.

A full day to explore the Serengeti properly, with morning and afternoon game drives covering different parts of the ecosystem depending on where the wildlife currently is — your guide will have the latest reports from other vehicles and camps in the area.
This is usually the day that produces the most memorable sightings of the trip: large predator kills, big cats resting in trees or on kopjes, and if you're travelling during the migration months, the sight of wildebeest and zebra stretching to the horizon in numbers that are genuinely hard to process from a photograph.
A final morning game drive before the drive back up onto the Ngorongoro highlands — often the most productive time of day for predator sightings, with lion and cheetah more active in the cooler early hours.
The climb back out of the Serengeti into the greener, cooler highland forest around Ngorongoro is a landscape change worth noticing in its own right. You arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon with the crater floor waiting below for the next morning.

An early descent takes you 610 metres down onto the crater floor — a self-contained ecosystem of grassland, swamp and soda lake enclosed by the crater's walls, holding an estimated 25,000 large mammals within 260 square kilometres.
This is one of the most reliable places in East Africa to see the Big Five in a single day. Lion prides are commonly seen in the open, buffalo and wildebeest graze in large herds, and the crater remains one of the last strongholds of the black rhino, alongside some of the densest spotted hyena clans on the continent.
By mid-afternoon you climb back out of the crater and begin the drive back to Arusha, bringing the safari to a close in the early evening.
