8 Day Safari in Tanzania: Ndutu Migration

8 Day Safari in Tanzania: Ndutu Migration
Driving Safari 8 Days / 7 Nights Ndutu Calving Plains
Safari Package

Timed for the wildebeest calving season on the Ndutu plains, alongside Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

The same strong northern-circuit foundation — Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater — built around two full days on the Ndutu plains, the short-grass calving grounds straddling the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Best timed for roughly December through March, when up to 8,000 wildebeest calves can be born daily and predator activity is at its most intense — widely considered some of the best game viewing of the year, with a fraction of the crowds of the July–October river-crossing season.

Met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Arusha, with the rest of the day free to settle in ahead of an early start the next morning.

Overnight: Arusha Planet Lodge / Mount Meru Hotel / Gran Melia, depending on tierMeal Plan: Dinner and breakfast

A drive of a little under two hours south-west into Tarangire National Park for an afternoon game drive among its elephant herds and centuries-old baobab trees.

Elephant family in Tarangire National Park
Overnight: Farm of Dreams / Escarpment Luxury / Ngorongoro Oldeani, depending on tierMeal Plan: Full board

The drive brings you to the Ndutu area, on the short-grass plains straddling the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is the heart of the wildebeest calving grounds, and between roughly December and March it holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere in the ecosystem.

Calving SeasonUp to 8,000 wildebeest calves can be born daily on these plains during peak calving (January–February), which in turn draws some of the best predator viewing of the year.
Overnight: Ndutu Mobile Camp / Nyikani Migration Camp / Lake Ndutu Luxury, depending on tierMeal Plan: Full board

A second full day on the Ndutu plains, timed around wherever the herds are currently concentrated. The short grass here makes for exceptional visibility, and the sheer number of vulnerable newborn calves draws in lion, cheetah and hyena in numbers that make this one of the best predator-viewing stretches on any of our itineraries.

Overnight: Ndutu Mobile Camp / Nyikani Migration Camp / Lake Ndutu Luxury, depending on tierMeal Plan: Full board

The drive continues north into the central Serengeti, with game viewing continuing along the way. The landscape opens out further here, and the scale of the Serengeti — 14,750 square kilometres, much of it visible to the horizon at once — is hard to miss.

Overnight: Tukaone Serengeti / Olkarien Eco Safari Camp / Melia Serengeti, depending on tierMeal Plan: Full board

A final Serengeti game drive before the drive up to the Ngorongoro highlands, where the landscape shifts from open plains to cooler, greener highland forest within a few hours.

Overnight: Farm of Dreams / Escarpment Luxury / Ngorongoro Oldeani, depending on tierMeal Plan: Full board

An early descent onto the crater floor brings you into one of the most concentrated wildlife arenas in Africa. Lion, buffalo and wildebeest are common across the open floor, and the crater is one of the last reliable places to see the black rhino.

Lunch at the Hippo PoolThe Ngoitokitok picnic site sits beside a resident hippo pod — a good spot for the crater's birdlife too.
Overnight: Farm of Dreams / Escarpment Luxury / Ngorongoro Oldeani, depending on tierMeal Plan: Full board

A last game drive through Lake Manyara National Park, known for tree-climbing lions and large baboon troops, before the drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.
