Machame Route (7 Days)

Machame Route (7 Days)
Kilimanjaro Trek 7 Days / 6 Nights Uhuru Peak
Kilimanjaro Package

The classic 'Whiskey Route' with an extra acclimatisation night at Karanga Camp.

The same well-loved Machame route, with one extra night added at Karanga Camp purely for acclimatisation. It's the version we recommend by default: the additional day gives your body meaningfully more time to adjust before the summit push, without changing the scenery or character of the trek.

Five climate zones, camping throughout, and one of the more sociable routes on the mountain given how popular it is.

Your Day-by-Day Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Tap a day to see the details

After a night at Arusha Planet Lodge, you're collected early and driven to the gate. Registration at the gate (1,800m) is followed by a climb through lush rainforest to Machame Camp at 3,000m.

The forest gives way to moorland as the trail climbs to Shira Camp (3,840m), with views back over Moshi and across to Mount Meru.

The trail climbs to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m) — a deliberate “climb high, sleep low” day for acclimatisation.

Climb High, Sleep LowReaching 4,630m before sleeping at 3,900m is one of the most effective single days for altitude adjustment on the mountain.

A shorter day that starts with the Barranco Wall — a steep, non-technical scramble — before a gentler walk to Karanga Camp (3,995m). This extra night, compared to the 6-day itinerary, is purely for acclimatisation.

A relatively short day up to Barafu Camp (4,673m), your base for the summit attempt, with the rest of the afternoon for rest and an early dinner before a midnight start.

A midnight departure and a slow, steady climb to Stella Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise. The long descent continues to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your certificate is issued before the drive back to Arusha, where a room is waiting at Arusha Planet Lodge for a hot shower and a final night before your onward journey.

Machame Route (7 Days) — Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?
No technical climbing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the days on the mountain. Regular walking or hiking beforehand is the best preparation.
What's your summit success rate on this route?
It varies by route and by how well you acclimatise, which is exactly why the extra day on longer itineraries genuinely helps — more time at altitude before the summit push meaningfully improves your odds.
Is the extra day worth the extra cost?
For most people, yes. More time at altitude before summit night generally means a more comfortable climb and a better chance of reaching the top.
