Machame Route (6 Days)

Machame Route (6 Days)
Kilimanjaro Trek 6 Days / 5 Nights Uhuru Peak
Kilimanjaro Package

The classic 'Whiskey Route' — Kilimanjaro's most popular path, camping all the way, in its standard 6-day length.

Machame is the most popular route up Kilimanjaro, and for good reason: varied scenery across five distinct climate zones, camping throughout, and a genuinely scenic approach through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert before the summit push.

This is the standard 6-day version. It's a well-tested itinerary, though the 7-day version with an extra night at Karanga gives your body more time to adjust and is worth considering if you'd rather not compress the acclimatisation.

After a night at Arusha Planet Lodge, you're collected early and driven to the gate. Registration at the gate (1,800m) is followed by a climb through lush rainforest to Machame Camp at 3,000m — a gentle introduction to the trek, usually taking 5–6 hours.

The forest gives way to moorland as the trail climbs to Shira Camp (3,840m), with your first proper views back over Moshi and, weather permitting, across to Mount Meru.

A day built for acclimatisation: the trail climbs to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m) — “climb high, sleep low,” one of the most effective ways to adjust to altitude.

Climb High, Sleep LowReaching 4,630m at Lava Tower before dropping back down to sleep at 3,900m is one of the most effective single days for acclimatisation on the whole mountain.

The Barranco Wall is a steep but non-technical scramble first thing in the morning, followed by a descent and re-ascent to Karanga Camp, then on to Barafu Camp (4,673m) — your base for the summit push. This is the longest day on the 6-day itinerary.

An adventure that starts at midnight: a slow, steady climb through the dark to Stella Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise. The descent continues all the way down to Mweka Camp (3,100m), making this by far the longest and hardest day of the trek.

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your certificate is issued before the drive back to Arusha, where a room is waiting at Arusha Planet Lodge for a hot shower and a final night before your onward journey.

Machame Route (6 Days) — Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?
No technical climbing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the days on the mountain. Regular walking or hiking beforehand is the best preparation.
What's your summit success rate on this route?
It varies by route and by how well you acclimatise, which is exactly why the extra day on longer itineraries genuinely helps — more time at altitude before the summit push meaningfully improves your odds.
Should I do 6 or 7 days on Machame?
7 days adds a night at Karanga Camp purely for acclimatisation, which generally improves comfort and summit success. If your schedule allows it, we'd lean toward the extra day.
