Northern Circuit (9 Days)

Northern Circuit (9 Days)
Kilimanjaro Trek 9 Days / 8 Nights Uhuru Peak
Kilimanjaro Package

The longest route on the mountain, actually circling Kilimanjaro's quiet northern side for the best acclimatisation of any itinerary.

The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest standard route on Kilimanjaro, and the only one that genuinely circles the mountain rather than approaching and retreating along a single line. Several days are spent on the northern slopes that almost no other route touches.

The extra length translates directly into the best acclimatisation profile of any itinerary we offer, and correspondingly the highest typical summit success rate — the trade-off is simply time and cost.

Your Day-by-Day Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Tap a day to see the details

After a night at Arusha Planet Lodge, you're collected early and driven to the gate. Registration at Londorossi Gate, then a walk through dense montane rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (2,780m).

The forest thins into moorland as the trail climbs onto the Shira Plateau, reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,500m).

A shorter day crossing the plateau to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m), with time to acclimatise and take in the volcanic scenery.

Rather than turning toward Lava Tower and Barranco, the Northern Circuit branches north to the quiet Moir Hut area (4,200m), used by only a handful of routes.

A full day tracing the mountain's northern slopes, well away from the busier southern routes, to Buffalo Camp (4,020m).

The Quiet SideThe Northern Circuit is the only itinerary that actually circles Kilimanjaro, spending several days on the mountain's northern flank that most other routes never touch.

The trail continues around the northern side toward the eastern approach, reaching Third Cave Camp (~3,900m), with Mawenzi's peak visible across the saddle.

The route joins the standard summit-approach path, climbing to Barafu Camp (4,673m), your base for the summit push, with the afternoon free to rest.

A midnight departure and steady climb to Stella Point, then Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise, followed by the long descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your certificate is issued before the drive back to Arusha, where a room is waiting at Arusha Planet Lodge for a hot shower and a final night before your onward journey.

Northern Circuit (9 Days) — Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?
No technical climbing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the days on the mountain. Regular walking or hiking beforehand is the best preparation.
What's your summit success rate on this route?
It varies by route and by how well you acclimatise, which is exactly why the extra day on longer itineraries genuinely helps — more time at altitude before the summit push meaningfully improves your odds.
Why choose this over Lemosho 8 days?
If maximising your summit chances and minimising crowds matters more than time or cost, the Northern Circuit goes further on both counts than any of our other itineraries.
