Rongai Route (6 Days)

Rongai Route (6 Days)
Kilimanjaro Trek 6 Days / 5 Nights Uhuru Peak
Kilimanjaro Package

The only route approaching from the north — quieter, drier, and descending via Marangu.

Rongai is the sole route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, starting near the Kenyan border. It's noticeably quieter than the southern routes, drier underfoot (a genuine advantage in the rainy season), and camps beneath Mawenzi's dramatic peak before crossing to Kibo and descending via Marangu.

Your Day-by-Day Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Tap a day to see the details

After a night at Arusha Planet Lodge, you're collected early and driven to the gate. Registration at Rongai Gate (1,950m) on the mountain's quieter northern side, then a walk through pine forest to Simba Camp (2,600m).

The trail climbs through moorland with views toward Kenya on a clear day, reaching Kikelewa Camp (3,600m), tucked in a sheltered valley.

A short but steep climb onto the alpine desert plateau beneath Mawenzi's jagged peak, arriving at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m) — one of the most dramatic campsites on the mountain.

The trail crosses the lunar-like “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), where you'll rest and eat early before the midnight summit push.

A midnight departure for the climb to Gillman's Point, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise, descending to Horombo Hut (3,700m) on the Marangu side of the mountain.

A final descent through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate, where your certificate is issued before the drive back to Arusha, where a room is waiting at Arusha Planet Lodge for a hot shower and a final night before your onward journey.

Why Choose This Kilimanjaro

What makes this experience exceptional

The quiet side of the mountain

Far fewer trekkers than the southern routes, and a genuinely different landscape along the way.

A drier option

Being on the mountain's rain shadow side, Rongai holds up better than most routes during the wetter months.

Part of the 50% pledge

Every booking contributes toward the share of profit we commit to the community projects we run with ERIPOTO.

Rongai Route (6 Days) — Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be?
No technical climbing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness makes a real difference to how much you enjoy the days on the mountain. Regular walking or hiking beforehand is the best preparation.
What's your summit success rate on this route?
It varies by route and by how well you acclimatise, which is exactly why the extra day on longer itineraries genuinely helps — more time at altitude before the summit push meaningfully improves your odds.
Why does Rongai descend via Marangu?
There's no direct way back down the northern side, so all Rongai itineraries finish by descending through Horombo and out via Marangu Gate — meaning you experience two different sides of the mountain in one trek.
