Materuni combines two things in one day: a hands-on coffee tour with a local Chagga family, and a guided hike through forest and banana groves to an 80-metre waterfall on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes.
It's a cultural and scenery day rather than a wildlife one — no game drives here — and a good way to see a different side of northern Tanzania if you've already had your fill of safari vehicles.

The drive from Arusha to the village of Materuni, on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro near Moshi, takes around two hours through increasingly lush, green farmland as the road climbs the mountain's foothills.
Materuni sits in Chagga coffee-growing country, and most visits start with a short, hands-on coffee tour — picking, roasting and grinding beans the traditional way with a local family, ending with a fresh cup brewed right there.
A guided walk of around 45 minutes to an hour through banana groves and forest brings you to the base of Materuni Waterfall, which drops roughly 80 metres into a cool plunge pool — a popular spot for a swim after the walk up.
The walk back down and the drive to Arusha, arriving in the mid-to-late afternoon.

What makes this experience exceptional
The coffee tour is run by a local Chagga family, not a tour-bus operation, and the pace reflects that.
The 45-60 minute walk ends at an 80-metre waterfall with a plunge pool — bring swimwear if you'd like to get in.
