Tarangire is usually the first stop on our multi-day safaris, but it also works well as a standalone day trip from Arusha for travellers who don't have a spare night to give it — the elephant sightings and baobab scenery are just as good whether you stay over or not.
A full day here, split between a morning and afternoon game drive with a picnic lunch in between, is enough time to properly experience what makes this park distinctive: some of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania and a landscape unlike anywhere else on the northern circuit.

An early pick-up from your Arusha hotel, with the drive to Tarangire National Park taking around two hours through open farmland and acacia country.
Tarangire is built around the Tarangire River, which draws some of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania, especially in the dry season. The morning drive covers the river-adjacent areas where elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo are commonly seen, alongside the park's centuries-old baobab trees.
A packed lunch is taken at a designated picnic site inside the park, usually with a view over the surrounding bush.
A further game drive through the afternoon before heading back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening.
