This is the longest of our day trips — roughly three hours each way just in driving — but it's also the one people ask for most, since the crater's wildlife density genuinely can be covered in a single (long) day if you're short on time for an overnight stay.
You'll get a proper game drive on the crater floor itself, not just a rim viewpoint, with realistic chances of lion, buffalo, flamingo and black rhino all in the same outing.

A very early pick-up from your Arusha hotel — this is the longest drive of any of our day trips, at around three hours each way, so an early start makes the most of your time on the crater floor.
The descent road drops 610 metres onto the crater floor, a self-contained ecosystem of grassland, swamp and soda lake enclosed by the crater's walls, holding an estimated 25,000 large mammals within 260 square kilometres.
Several hours of game driving across the open floor, with lion prides commonly seen in the open, large herds of buffalo and wildebeest, flamingos at Lake Magadi, and one of the densest spotted hyena populations on the continent.
By early afternoon you climb back out of the crater and begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening.
