Why visit Arusha National Park?

Spanning a compact 137 square kilometres, Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania's most ecologically diverse and scenic sanctuaries. Positioned directly in the shadow of Mount Meru — Tanzania's second-highest peak — the park transitions rapidly from dense montane rainforests to rolling alpine meadows, crater floors and shallow alkaline lakes.

Unlike many of Tanzania's vast open savannahs, Arusha National Park offers immersive, close-up wilderness activities. Visitors can embark on guided walking safaris accompanied by an armed ranger or paddle along the alkaline Momella Lakes beside pink flamingos and hippos. With a high concentration of giraffe, large troops of rare black-and-white colobus monkey, and views stretching out to Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days, it serves as an introduction to northern Tanzania.

5 Reasons We Love Arusha National Park

  1. Guided Walking Safaris One of the few national parks in northern Tanzania where you can walk on foot alongside giraffe, zebra and buffalo, guided by an armed park ranger.

  3. Home of the Black-and-White Colobus The ancient montane canopy hosts one of East Africa's densest populations of the striking black-and-white colobus monkey.
  4. Mount Meru Trekking Base Serves as the starting point for ascending Mount Meru (4,566m), an ideal high-altitude trek and acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro.
  5. Ngurdoto Crater & Diverse Habitats Features the swampy floor of the miniature Ngurdoto Crater, often called 'Little Ngorongoro', surrounded by rainforest.

About Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park is divided into three main landscape zones: the high-altitude forested slopes and ash cone of Mount Meru in the west, the Momella Lakes in the northeast, and the enclosed Ngurdoto Crater in the southeast.

Fed by rainforest moisture from Mount Meru, the park stays green throughout the year. While top-tier predators like lions are absent, this lack of large lion prides makes the park an ideal setting for foot safaris and family excursions.

Warm and dry, with clear skies and excellent photography conditions across all zones.

March – May

Long rains bring heavy cloud cover and rainfall; landscapes are green, though walking trails can become slippery.
